How To Change The Hard Drive In A MacBook To start you should have a clean, non-abrasive, anti-static area to work. You will need a coin or large flat blade screwdriver, and a small phillips screwdriver. First make sure the MacBook is shutdown. Close the lid and turn it upside down so you have access to the battery. With the battery close to you the battery latch will be to the left of the battery. Using the coin or flat blade screwdriver, turn the latch screw counterclockwise. The battery should lift a bit. Remove the battery. Inside the battery compartment there is an L-shape bracket with three captive screws. Using the small Phillips screwdriver loosen the three captive screws and remove the L-shaped bracket. This will reveal the two RAM slots and to the left the hard drive. The hard drive has a plastic flap tucked under the drive. Pry out the flap and pull the drive out of it's bay. If the new hard drive was provided by Apple it will have the shielding with the flap already installed. If not, you will have to transfer the shielding from the old drive onto the new one. Slide the new drive into the drive bay and make sure you get a good connection. Tuck in the flap so it is out of the way. Re-install the L-shaped bracket, and tighten the captive screws. Re-install the battery and turn the battery latch screw clockwise to lock the battery in place.
