Learning Guitar The Old Fashioned Way
When I started playing guitar I couldn't afford lessons, or even an amp. All I had was my bargain basement guitar and an old stereo system with a record player. I modified my guitar cable so it could be plugged into one side of the stereo with the record player plugged in the other side. I would put on headphones and slow down the records and play along over and over again. Then as I got better I could isolate the different instruments in my head which made it easier to learn songs. Unfortunately when I started, all the printed music was standard music notation. There were no guitar transcriptions like there is now. Eventually I got an amp and a better guitar. I bought books on music theory and started buying the various guitar magazines. Short of taking lessons, I think the way I went about learning to play guitar was the right way to do it. I learned by listening. Something more people should do. |
